What could cause your washer to leak?

To diagnose this problem, the first thing you should do is locate the source of the leak. Where is the water located? Is it pooled up under your washer but not behind it? If so, chances are you can eliminate the fill and drain hose from being at fault here.

However, the most common cause of a washer leak is damage to the drain pump or its bearings. Unfortunately, the pump cannot be fixed and you will need to buy and install a new one if this is what's to blame. Replacing the pump will be tricky for an appliance repair novice and is best left for a professional to handle. Plus, they can look for water damage to other parts and make sure nothing else should be fixed at the same time.

The next common issue is a tear in the tub gasket. This leakage can pass through into the bearings of your washer's tub which will result in bearing failure. For a successful washer repair, such a situation requires you to put in both a new tub seal and bearing. Such a replacement requires taking apart almost your entire washer and therefore should be left to a professional.

The boot seal for your washing machine's door (for a front-loader) might also have a tear and be causing a little leak. The hose which goes from the tub to the drain pump can also tear and cause leaking throughout the machine.

Not sure where the leak is coming from or what could be to blame? Leaks in washing machines are hazardous anyway. It's almost always recommended you leave both the diagnosis and repair in the hands of a qualified and licensed washer repair professional.

Helpful tip

Ever wonder if you're making mistakes when using your washing machine? Some little errors of judgment can cause unnecessary wear and tear to your unit. A major mistake many people make is overloading the machine. Putting too much stuff in will undoubtedly push the internal parts a bit too far. Using the wrong cycle option can also be a big mistake. For instance, a specialty mode should be used for blankets because a heavier rinse is required. Additionally, while not a technical mistake, you should avoid keeping the standard rubber hoses and invest in a braided alternative.
